The Cosain Cause

At Cosain Group, our mission is rooted in our name—”Cosain,” the Gaelic word meaning “to protect.” Guided by this principle, we equip individuals with the critical knowledge, skills, and tools needed to preserve life in high-stakes situations. Our tactical medicine and trauma first aid training empowers both first responders and civilians to respond with confidence and precision when every second matters. To support these life-saving efforts, we also provide rigorously tested medical kits and supplies, trusted in real-world emergencies.

About Ted Mahar

Owner / Lead Instructor

Ted Mahar combines decades of experience as a police officer and tactical medic to deliver practical, life-saving instruction for high-stress scenarios. His unique background bridges emergency medicine with field experience, preparing individuals to protect life when it matters most.

My journey into protective medicine has been shaped by dual passions for healthcare and public safety. What began as an early interest in medicine led me to study biochemistry in college, until a criminology elective revealed a new calling—ultimately guiding me to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology from the University of Southern Maine.

Since 1997, I’ve served as a reserve police officer, but my medical interests resurged in 2002 when I became a licensed EMT. This unique combination of skills led me to join a municipal tactical team as a tactical medic, eventually transitioning to a regional SWAT team following the consolidation of multiple units.

My tactical medical expertise is built on comprehensive training including:

  • NTOA SWAT School
  • Basic and Advanced Tactical Medic School
  • Specialized Trauma and Rescue Tactics
  • Officer Down Rescue
  • PHTLS and Healthcare Provider CPR certifications

Today, I train both patrol officers and SWAT operators in Tactical Rescue and Casualty Care, along with Fire and EMS personnel in Violent Incidents Prehospital Emergency Response. I’ve also worked extensively on active shooter planning with public and private schools.

As a civilian, I’m an avid shooter and certified NRA instructor who believes that learning never stops—whether I’m teaching or being taught. My instructional approach encourages open dialogue between students and instructors, creating true ownership of the material. Through a blend of lectures, visual aids, and hands-on stations, I engage all learning styles.

At Cosain Group, our mission is clear: we want to give you the training and confidence to protect life when faced with traumatic medical incidents. Because when those critical moments arrive, preparation makes all the difference.
